Exparel® for Pain Management
Every patient experiences post-operative pain differently. What may be tolerable for one patient may be unbearable for another. Historically, oral surgeons had few options for their patients: ineffective over-the-counter pain relievers or opioids, which had unpleasant side effects and were highly addictive. Dr. Niemann now offers Exparel®, an innovative pain management solution that relieves post-op pain for up to three days.
What is Exparel®?
EXPAREL (bupivacaine liposome injectable suspension) is an injectable, non-addictive pain management medication. It is a local, long-lasting anesthetic designed to release its active ingredient slowly over an extended period. Exparel keeps patients more comfortable as they recover from oral surgery and has fewer side effects than opioids, which can cause nausea, vomiting, and constipation. It is safe and effective and avoids the potential for addiction common in opioid pain medications.
How Exparel® Works
When Dr. Niemann administers Exparel, it spreads locally, releasing pain-relieving lipids that block nerves from sending pain signals to the brain. The relief typically lasts two to three days, providing a significant period of comfort. Many patients find that they do not need any other pain management in the first few days following oral surgery when Exparel is used.
Advantages of Exparel
- Because Exparel works at the surgical site, you avoid the drowsiness and other side effects of systemic pain medications.
- You do not have to remember schedules or dosages for oral pain relievers during recovery. This convenience can provide a sense of relief during what can be a challenging time.
- Exparel is most effective in the first three days post-op when pain management is crucial to recovery.
- Exparel has proven effective in clinical trials and is approved by the FDA.
When Is Exparel® Used?
Dr. Niemann may use Exparel for oral surgeries such as wisdom teeth removal, bone grafting, tooth extractions, dental implant surgery, and other procedures. He evaluates each patient’s overall health, pain management needs, and preferences when deciding whether to use Exparel as a post-operative pain reliever. At your pre-surgery consultation, Dr. Niemann will discuss your pain management options and answer any questions. You can choose whether to use Exparel (if appropriate) at that time.
Does Insurance cover Exparel®?
Insurance coverage for Exparel varies depending on your carrier and coverage limits. It is best to contact your insurer to determine what coverage you have, the deductibles, and copays. We offer no- and low-interest payment plans and accept credit cards and CareCredit, so you do not have to forego any form of pain management if your insurance does not cover it.
